Urban GrowthThe urban growth model uses the land cover data from the first phase of Connecticut’s Changing Landscape to characterize patterns of the growth of developed land within the state. If you look at our land cover change maps, your eyes can pick out the general pattern of how your town or watershed has been developed—but we want to be able to be able to describe those patterns objectively, and in some detail. The urban growth model will allow us to do this. It looks at each individual developed “pixel” and notes its relationship to the other pixels around it. By doing this for the entire state (some X million pixels!), it classifies all new developed land into one of 5 types of urban growth: infill, expansion, clustered branching, linear branching and isolated. This will help us to gain more insight into issues like “smart growth” and “sprawl.” |
